Have you gone stagnant?

waterI changed my running route this morning and heard rushing water that was full of energy and promise. I realized that my life and energy feel like a stagnant pool, yet I want to feel like the rush of that brook.

It is easy to get bogged down in distractions like email and Facebook and keeping up with comments on a blog, chores, errands, everyday commitments that suck your energy. How much more meaningful would your life be if you looked up from time to time to dream?

Do you have a passion? If you could do anything, what would it be? What do you want to be when you “grow up”?

These are the questions I’ve been asking myself lately, and am determined to find the answers to. And to do that, I need to eliminate or at least minimize the distractions to free up mental space for dreaming.

My plan for the next few weeks is simple:

  • Limit time spent on email, Facebook and other social media to 15 minutes 4 times a day (that’s only an hour altogether).
  • Be more intentional with my schedule by blocking out time for the daily must-do’s, in order to free up time for dreaming.
  • Set myself up for success by creating an environment for dreaming – let those around me know I have an appointment with myself, go somewhere quiet, play soft music.
  • Get out of the box – let my mind explore without limitations. There will be time later to reel things back in, but discover those dreams and passions first.

Once I’ve discovered what my dreams really are, then I can start laying out the plan to get there. But in the meantime, I want the ideas and the energy to flow like that water.

Are you stagnant or is your life energy flowing toward your dreams?

  1. The analogy of rushing water is fantastic. When we are stuck in a tide pool, we don’t realize it until everything seems the same. Love this post for its motivation. Keep on this track.

    • Thank you Pat. Hope you are able to find that rushing water too.
